In Berlin, the Haus der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland Foundation presents a range of activities illustrating different aspects of German history.
Since 15 September 2011, the former Friedrichstraße station border crossing point, popularly known as the "Palace of Tears" ("Tränenpalast"), has hosted the "Border Experiences - Everyday life in divided Germany" permanent exhibition.
This is where history actually happened. From 1962 through 1990, the “Tränenpalast” is the departure hall where millions of Germans bid one another an often tearful farewell; family and friends are torn apart.
